For a cult to form, it takes a balance; a symmetry of circumstances and encounters for cults to find their footing, drawing both followers and leaders into their circle. As for the leaders, it's the pursuit of power, wealth, or maybe the deep impulse to destroy. Nihilism is the belief that all values are baseless and that nothing can be known or communicated. A true nihilist would believe in nothing, have no loyalists and no purpose other than perhaps, destruction...
